Raster and Vector Charts Explained

Raster Charts
Raster charts are bitmap images. Raster charts are similar in concept to a JPEG or GIF file; they are simply pictures of paper charts. Manufacturers of raster charts scan paper or film images of the charts. Additional information is added to the chart images so that the vessel marks and routes can be shown at the proper latitude and longitude.

Examples of raster charts include BSB format, Maptech and Softchart charts.

Raster charts are made up of a collection of colored points called pixels. Combined, the dots create an image that represents the original chart. To view a location at a different scale the computer changes the size of the pixels.

Vector Charts
Vector charts are usually made from paper charts. Cartographers use special software to create a database of various elements found on a paper chart. As each element is entered into the database they are identified as a depth sounding, buoy, bridge and shorelines, etc. The computer draws the chart data is such a way that it looks similar to the original chart.
